Buffon and De Rossi have both been lined up for farewell appearances by the president of the Italian FA but could yet return to the international fold.

‘It was the president’s idea and I agreed with him,’ Mancini told Rai Sport when asked about the proposed farewell appearances. ‘It would be great if we could make it happen.

‘As for whether it’ll be at the Euros, we’ll see.’

The former Manchester City boss also revealed his ambition is to win next summer’s tournament and write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.

‘We want to bring the national team back where they deserve to be,’ he continued.

‘They’ve won the World Cup four times but haven’t won the European Championship for such a long time so we want to go all the way [in 2020].
