Ronald Koeman has clause in Holland contract that lets him leave after Euros if Barcelona want him

Ronald Koeman has clause in his Holland contract that allows him to leave after Euro 2020… but ONLY if Barcelona want to hire him as their new manager

  • Ronald Koeman took over the Holland side in 2018 and has rejuvenated the team
  • But he has always held a special place for Barcelona and wants to manage them
  • His contract allows the Catalan side and no one else to nab him next summer
  • The Dutch FA are focusing on Koeman leading the side into the 2022 World Cup

Holland manager Ronald Koeman has a clause in his contract that would let him depart the Oranje after Euro 2020 – but only if Barcelona come calling.

The former Everton boss has been leading his national side since February 2018 after being sacked by the Toffees in 2017 following a run of poor results.

He took over from Dick Advocaat after his predecessor failed to help Holland qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and the team have certainly responded under the new management as they are on the verge of qualifying for the Euros next summer.

Holland boss Ronald Koeman reportedly has his heart set on a future move to Barcelona

Koeman is said to have always held a special place in his heart for Barcelona, a team he played for across six years and later serving as assistant manager, and now it has been revealed that he would be able to quit his post if the Catalan side wanted him.

The news was confirmed by Dutch FA director Nico-Jan Hoogma, who said Barcelona were the only side capable of freeing Koeman from his contract – which runs until 2022.

‘Agreements were reached on this matter but [Barcelona] would have to pay for it,’ he told Fox Sports. ‘Ronald has always indicated that he wants to be a coach in Barcelona one day. We’ll see what will happen.’

Hoogma admitted that a good display by Holland at Euro 2020 could lead to interest from Barcelona should they decide to axe current boss Ernesto Valverde, but is focusing on Koeman’s future with the side and is looking to the 2022 World Cup.

‘Success with the Dutch team can help you (to go to Barcelona) but I hope we finish the process and be together until the World Cup in Qatar. I hope we can work together for a long time, because I think it’s going very well.’

There is no current indication that Barcelona are looking to get rid of Valverde, but his future will almost certainly depend on the successes of the current season.

Lionel Messi and co top the La Liga table as it stands with 19 points, but Real Madrid are breathing down their necks and are just one point behind.

Koeman joined Barcelona in 1989 and played 350 games for the club, scoring 106 times and winning twelve trophies.
