‘There were no racist chants at the stadium’: Verona mayor denies fans racially abused Brescia striker Mario Balotelli

  • Mario Balotelli booted the ball after he became angry towards the alleged abuse
  • Verona club president Maurizio Setti insisted that fans are ‘ironic but not racist’
  • Federico Sboarina refuted any allegations that fans had been racist to Balotelli

Verona mayor Federico Sboarina has denied the claims that Verona fans racially abused Brescia striker Mario Balotelli.

Balotelli booted the ball into the stands and was only stopped from storming off the pitch by his team-mates after he became angry towards the alleged abuse being made in his direction during the match last Sunday.

Verona club president Maurizio Setti insisted that the supporters are ‘ironic but not racist’ and now Sboarina has refuted any allegations that fans had been racist to Balotelli.

‘It seems like the sentence has already been written in stone,’ Sboarina told ANSA, as reported by Football Italia.

‘Objectively, what’s happening to our city is unacceptable.

‘I reiterate, I was at the stadium and everyone seemed astonished when Balotelli kicked the ball away. No one could explain it.

‘Therefore, there can only be the assumption that it doesn’t exist because there were no racist chants at the stadium.

‘A fan base and city are being put to shame.’
