With Joe Gomez set to miss this summer’s European Championships due to a serious knee injury sustained whilst on international duty Stones’ re-emergence has arrived at an opportune time.

The defender has made 12 appearances so far this season, and appears to be firmly back in favour with Guardiola.

Whether Stones can gatecrash England’s squad for the start of their World Cup qualification campaign in March – and the Euros in June – will be dependent on regular football.

But if Southgate is satisfied the level of action Stones is seeing in the next eight weeks he will give serious consideration to recalling the a defender, who played a key role in England’s euphoric run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.

Southgate is a huge admirer of Stones’ character and believes he is perfectly suited to tournament football.
