Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland tipped to make Liverpool transfer by Michael Rummenigge

Erling Haaland is one of the most sought after stars in Europe and Liverpool are the latest of Europe’s elite to be tipped with a move for the forward.

Former Borussia Dortmund star Michael Rummenigge has claimed Liverpool could be a possible landing spot for Haaland in summer 2022.

The rumour mill has continued turning after another exquisite season in Germany for Haaland attracted the hottest suitors from across Europe’s top flights.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are forever being linked to such a star but Rummenigge believed England was a more probable destination for the Norwegian.

Rummenigge, who spent five years at Dortmund, told Sport1: ‘We’ll have to wait and see where he goes after this season.

‘Real and Barca have financial problems so I could imagine him moving to England. His father used to play there too. I could well imagine Liverpool for Haaland.’

Having hit 62 goals through just 61 appearances for Dortmund, the 21-year-old is an exceptional talent who would make a thrilling prospect for any of Europe’s upper echelons.

‘Haaland is an exceptional phenomenon. Players like that only come along every 30 or 40 years,’ said Rummenigge.

‘I don’t know what his career plans are, but for Dortmund it’s great that he’s still wearing the black and yellow jersey this season.

‘He is an absolute goal machine, his opponents fly away to the right and left when he starts running. I’ve never seen anything like him at that age.

‘The only drawback with a player of his size is his headers. He doesn’t score enough goals with his head. Otherwise, Haaland is a perfect player.’

In March, Sportsmail reported Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid were interested in signing the forward.

Haaland quashed talk of a move to the European champions at the time as he claimed he was happy in Germany and that he hoped the rumoured £150m fee was just that.

And with the arrival of £98m Romelu Lukaku last week, it is unlikely Chelsea will break the bank to bring Haaland to Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid were reported to be at the front of the queue to secure the signature of the generational talent but current financial difficulties have presented a hurdle to Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The La Liga giants have also long been touted as suitors for PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and could link the two young stars at the Bernabeu.

But Real could wait until next summer in order to secure his services on a free transfer to ease the financial pressure.

City have already splashed out this summer with the £100m acquisition of former Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish but Pep Guardiola could be looking for long-term options in a No 9 role too.

However, Harry Kane appears to have a firm grasp on City’s attention in this transfer window with the England international their main focus.

Despite the potential bidding war brewing, the forward is under contract until 2024 and insisted he remains happy to stay with Dortmund, particularly after winning his first piece of silverware with the club last season as they claimed the DFB-Pokal.

‘I have three years left on my contract,’ he said. ‘I’m enjoying my time here.

‘But of course the trophy was important because that’s what I want.’

Dortmund have already lost a key member of their squad this summer in Jadon Sancho, who last week completed his long-awaited £73m move to Manchester United.

However, they have remained adamant that Haaland will not follow suit.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl told Sky Germany earlier in July that Haaland is ‘hungry’ and ‘comfortable’ playing for Dortmund.

Kehl said: ‘There is nothing new on this matter. He is in our plans. Erling will return this week and he will be very hungry.

‘He wants to play football, he feels comfortable with us and he will be eager to score many goals.’

Haaland will look to continue his firing form on Tuesday night when Dortmund face Bayern Munich the DFL-Super Cup, and will hope to avenge the defeat by the Bavarians in September last year in the same competition.
