After committing star striker Gerard Moreno to the club for another six years, Villarreal opted to break the news to fans in the most bizarre of ways.

The reigning Europa League champions have been working tirelessly all summer to get fresh terms on the table for their talisman, and reward him for his role in ending the club’s long wait for silverware.

But perhaps Moreno was at first taken aback when informed he would be presented in disguise to gathered masses in the city centre, as the ‘masked singer.’

Gathered fans were unsure what to expect when first greeted by the ‘masked singer’ on stage

Footage has now circulated online of Moreno stood on stage in a yellow costume, with a large blue mask over his head.

A screen behind Moreno read ‘mask singer’ – a reference to the popular TV show which has been a hit around the world – before the striker revealed his identity and the graphic transformed into ‘Gerard 2027’ amid an explosion of fireworks.

The lengthy deal is an extraordinary one, given Moreno turned 29 in April and is therefore effectively committing the remainder of his playing days to the club.

Moreno is soon set to feature in the Super Cup final, as his side go up against Champions League winners Chelsea to contest the season’s first silverware.

After penning the deal, Moreno said: ‘I’ve always liked to represent this badge, and for me, this club is really big.’

The Spain international also wanted to thank the club for all the support given to him since he joined as a teenager.

He added: ‘Thanks a lot to the president, to Llaneza, and to Fernando Roig Negueroles, who, since I arrived aged 18 have always shown trust in me and that they care about me.

‘It’s reciprocated. I’ve also always noted the support and love for me that the fans have.’
