RTL Sport have now reported that Liverpool are ‘best placed’ to sign the Belgium international next year.

Though any deal would more likely happen in the summer, the Reds could be short of attacking options when Mo Salah and Sadio Mane head to the African Cup of Nations in the winter.

Doku can provide cover for Salah and Mane who both turn 30 next year, as he can play on either flank.

The fast and skilful winger is an exciting prospect who has impressed at Rennes since completing a £22m move from Anderlecht in the summer of 2020.

In his first season in Ligue 1, he made 30 appearances and scored two goals.

He made his international debut in a Nations League clash against Denmark last September and has since gone on to make 10 appearances for his country.

Doku has endured a frustrating start to the current season after he suffered a hamstring injury against Nantes in August and is yet to return to action.

Liverpool had been linked with Doku as a potential replacement to Xherdan Shaqiri who left for Lyon, but the Reds made just one signing in the summer in the form of defender Ibrahima Konate.
