England manager Gareth Southgate has agreed a deal with the FA to extend his stay as national team head coach.

The governing body have made no secret of their desire to sign Southgate to a contract extension, chief executive Mark Bullingham admitting over the summer that it was their intention to offer the 51-year-old a new deal.

Southgate’s current contract expires after the World Cup but there is a will from both parties to extend that until Euro 2024.

And as MailOnline reported on Friday afternoon, an agreement in principle has been reached, with the situation expected to move quickly once England have secured World Cup qualification.

‘We need a point [to qualify] and it would be wrong for my attention to be anywhere else. It’s an irrelevance for me. I’m under contract, I’m very well backed and supported and my focus is just on getting qualification.’

Southgate earns £3million a year, but he can expect a sharp pay rise taking him beyond the £5m mark with bonuses if targets are met.

Southgate's new deal will take him to the Euro 2024 campaign, to be played in Germany

Former England boss Capello was on £6m a year

Southgate’s new deal will take him to the Euro 2024 campaign, to be played in Germany, and if he wins next year’s World Cup he could match Fabio Capello’s (right) salary of £6m a year

The deal is yet to be formally completed, however. Southgate has been at pains to stress since Euro 2020 that he would not commit to a new deal until qualification for Qatar 2020 was secured.

But Sportsmail understands that barring a late and unexpected collapse, only the formalities are left to be confirmed.

The FA were refusing to comment on the issue on Friday night ahead of any announcement.
