Bundesliga break tradition by postponing Eintracht Frankfurt’s penultimate game of the season to allow recovery from Chelsea semi-final

  • The DFL has moved the game from the penultimate round of Bundesliga games
  • Traditionally, all Bundesliga sides kick off the final two rounds at 3:30pm
  • But now Eintracht Frankfurt will have an extra day to recover for Mainz clash

The DFL have broken with tradition and moved Eintracht Frankfurt’s penultimate Bundesliga fixture to aid their recovery from playing Chelsea in the Europa League semi-final.

Historically, every team in the Bundesliga plays the final two rounds of fixtures at the same time, kicking off at 3:30pm.

But in an unorthodox move, the governing body have appeased Frankfurt, moving their game against Mainz from May 11 to Sunday May 12 at 6:00pm.

Eintracht will have played their second leg against Chelsea on Thursday, May 9.

No doubt the extra 24 hours recovery time will be beneficial and help the club’s bid to finish ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach and seal fourth place in the Bundesliga.

European Leagues frequently appease their sides in Europe, leading some Premier League bosses to complain about the Premier League dragging their feet.

Dutch authorities the KNVB postponed the entire final round of fixtures in the Eredivisie by two-and-a-half weeks to give the team a better chance in the Champions League semi-final against Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp called on the FA to do the same with Maurizio Sarri and Pep Guardiola also regularly lamenting the unbalanced treatment compared to sides in Europe.

And the Premier League subsequently adjusted Liverpool and Tottenham’s games to May 4 rather than May 5 to give them an extra day of recovery.

Chelsea and Arsenal, both Europa League semi-finalists, will also benefit from having their Premier League games moved to May 5.
