Northern Ireland fell to defeat after a controversial Ricardo Rodriguez penalty gift Switzerland the advantage from the first-leg or their World Cup play-off.
Corry Evans was penalized for a hand ball in the box, after Xherdan Shaqiri's shot seemed to hit him on the back of his shoulder from close range.
The home side were incensed by the decision but must now go to Basle and get a result in the second leg to keep their hopes of reaching a first World Cup in 32 years alive.
Elsewhere Croatia thrashed Greece 4-1 in the other play-off of the night, while Scotland were beaten 1-0 at home by Holland.
