Later in the evening the squad gathered on a balcony on the second floor of Porto’s city hall and lifted the trophy high into the air in front of thousands of fans who flooded the street below.

Ronaldo led the celebrations as he picked up a microphone and started speaking to those gathered on Avenida dos Aliados before manager Fernando Santos also addressed the fans.

Supporters were captured climbing on street lights and statues to get the best view as they paid tribute to their footballing heroes.

Members of the squad were filmed hoisting the trophy into the air as they received the adoration of the public.

Ronaldo was unwilling to let go of the trophy it seems. He hugged it as he made his way into the venue before posing for several pictures with his team-mates on the balcony.

Ronaldo was once again a crucial figure for his country and, after coming off injured in the final of Euro 2016, was desperate to play a crucial role this time around.

His stunning hat-trick saw off Switzerland 3-1 on Wednesday and earned Portugal their place in the final.

He admitted after the win on Sunday that he is proud of the strides his country has made in recent years, adding: ‘Since 2016 Portugal has changed their history and won a trophy again.

‘The goal for this match was to win and to play well.’

The 34-year-old Juventus forward added: ‘For sure this national team will be even better and the younger players will play more.’
