A smiling Damien Delaney appeared, without explanation, on Roma’s official English Twitter feed and most supporters were stumped.
The Crystal Palace defender was fresh from announcing his departure from the London side at the age of 36 but a link – or even a move – to the Champions League semi-finalists appears both slim and unlikely.
Nonetheless the Italians tweeted ‘GrazieDamien’ to thank the player alongside an eagle emoji – Palace are nicknamed the Eagles – and it appeared users of the social network would be left to draw their own conclusions.
Roma’s #GrazieDamien tweet left Twitter users baffled as to its reasoning on Monday
The 36-year-old announced he is to leave Crystal Palace following the end of the season
One user wrote: ‘It’s time for the world to appreciate Damien Delaney in all his glory.’
The former Republic of Ireland defender has been on the periphery of the Palace first team all season and his departure, especially given his contract was set to expire, seemed inevitable.
And despite the Italians love of older defenders, it would still prove one of the strangest and most unlikely transfers in recent history.
Football fans speculated whether the defender was set to see out his final years in Serie A
While others merely wanted the world to show their appreciation for the experienced player
Compared to Roma’s Federico Fazio, Delaney is quicker according to FIFA 18, joked one fan
There were those that were simply too confused to comment, Roma fans alarmed at the club’s left-field recruitment and others who simply wanted to join in on the fun.
Daniel Nye insisted the Irishman is ‘rapid compared to his counterparts’ as his FIFA 18 card shows he has 32 pace compared to current Roma centre-back Federico Fazio’s 30 pace.
Maybe Romans are just really into Delaney and the rest of us never quite figured it out?
