Getafe 0-1 Real Madrid: Eder Militao header secures comfortable win for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as they leapfrog Barcelona to move back to the top of LaLiga

  • Real Madrid beat Getafe 1-0 in LaLiga this evening in what was an easy game
  • Eder Militao’s third-minute header was enough to secure the three points
  • Carlo Ancelotti’s side now leapfrog Barcelona to move to the top of LaLiga

Ahead of their biggest week of the season so far Real Madrid barely got out of the low gears against Getafe but still came away with a 1-0 win to move top of La Liga.

Barcelona can overtake them on Sunday night if they beat Celta Vigo – that game might be tougher than this canter for Madrid against their neighbours.

Edu Militao won it after just three minutes with a goal in his 100th official match for the Spanish champions.

The best news for Carlo Ancelotti was that he was able to rest Karim Benzema and Thibaut Courtois and still get the comfortable win. Both the keeper and the centre-forward should be back in midweek for the trip to Warsaw to play Shakhtar Donetsk and for next Sunday’s Clasico.

Madrid were in front on minute three when Militao glanced Luka Modric’s corner past David Soria. The defender’s had arced his run from back post to front post perfectly to arrive unmarked to score his first goal of the season.

Getafe were close to drawing level when Fabricio Angileri’s shot went just past Andriy Lunin’s far post. But it was Madrid who dominated and when Luis Milla chopped down Vinicius in the area, referee Mateu Lahoz pointed to the spot. Getafe players complained the ball had gone out for a throw-in and VAR ruled the goal out.

Getafe had the first chance of the second half and Lunin got down well to send Carles Aleña’s shot past the post for a corner. Soria blocked Aurelien Tchouameni’s shot as Getafe pushed for the equalizer.

On 56 minutes Rodrgyo Goes had the ball in the Getafe net but VAR again intervened to deny Madrid the goal. Fede Valverde made it happen forcing a way through Getafe’s defence and the ball cannoned into Rodrygo’s path but he had gone a fraction to soon and was the wrong side of the last defender when the ball was played.

As Madrid toiled for a second goal Valverde pinged a long-range shot at Soria and he almost spilled it to the on-rushing Vinicius. The Brazilian was then gifted a chance to double the lead when substitute Marco Asensio teed-up him up but he skied his curling shot over.

Madrid were now close to keeping their first clean sheet in La Liga but Juan Latasa was given the chance to change that with four minutes left but he lifted his shot over Lunin.

Valverde was trying from further and further from goal and just inside his own half he left fly but Soria was not tested.

Getafe forced a corner with two minutes left but Nacho headed it out and on the volley Luis Milla sent it over the bar. Djene then went down dramatically in the area but there was no penalty and no equalizer for Getafe.

It was a tame test for Madrid – now the really hard work starts as they try to secure Champions League qualification to the group stage, and take on Barcelona at home next Sunday.
