Paul Scholes has made a light-hearted response to criticism of Antony in the build-up to Manchester United’s 2-1 win at Everton on Sunday.

The Manchester United legend had the gall to call the Brazilian winger a ‘one-trick pony’ after their Europa League match on Thursday – only for the 22-year-old to score against the Toffees three days later.

An Instagram user highlighted the 47-year-old’s controversial comment, alongside a picture of Antony celebrating his goal. The user opted to soundtrack their Story with Limp Bizkit’s 2000 song ‘My Generation’, which was released the same year that Manchester United’s summer signing was born.

On Monday, Scholes reposted that post, adding the caption ‘Whoops!’

Scholes had criticised Antony and Jadon Sancho for their roles in Man United’s Europa League match against Nicosia Omonia, which they eventually won 3-2 – adding to comments made after the match by United boss Erik Ten Hag, who thought they were ‘static’.

After that match, pundit Scholes told BT Sport: ‘He was right about the wingers being static. Sancho never really runs in behind. He needs a fast left-back if he’s playing on the left, he needs a striker to link with. They haven’t really got that at the moment.

‘Antony on the other side as well, he doesn’t run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony.

‘He’s always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You’re thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It’s still early days for him, we know that.’

Antony followed up his criticised performance in Cyprus with a goal at Goodison Park, making him the first Man United player to score in each of his first three Premier League games.

Manchester United now host Omonia in the reverse fixture on Thursday, before welcoming Newcastle United to Old Trafford next Sunday.
