Williams’ new No 2 driver takes the No 2! Logan Sargeant picks his race number ahead of the 2023 season, as he prepares to become the first American F1 driver in eight years

The newest kid on Formula One’s block has officially picked the number he will be racing with for his first season.

American driver Logan Sargeant has announced he will be racing with the #2 in the 2023 Formula One World Championship season.

Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne was the last Formula One driver to race with that number – back when he was racing with McLaren in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

The American earned his seat by finishing fourth in the drivers standings in the Formula Two Championship last season. That gave him enough super license points to make it into F1.

Sargeant took some time in deciding his number, with reporters asking him a few weeks ago if he had made a decision.

‘I can’t really figure it out myself,’ Sargeant admitted. ‘I’ve looked through the list, many, many times, and one hasn’t really stood out to me yet.’

Sargeant raced with the #6 on his car last season in Formula Two, and that was available now that Williams dropped Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi.

But instead, he went with #2 – a number he’s been familiar with in other racing series’ in the past.

‘I used to run [no. 2] in Formula Renault, and I had a pretty good season that year,’ Sargeant explained.

‘Number three is my number, but that’s taken [by Daniel Ricciardo] so I figured why not take a winning number from the past and run with in F1?’

The last driver to win a world title with the #2 on his car was Alain Prost back in 1993.
