Manchester United fans joke Frenkie De Jong is playing at Old Trafford after Europa League draw

Manchester United fans have joked that Frenkie de Jong will finally be playing at Old Trafford following their Europa League draw.

Barcelona midfielder De Jong was the subject of a protracted saga over a potential move to United in the summer transfer window but he ended up staying with the Spanish giants.

The Dutchman will now line up against United, and former manager Erik ten Hag, after the two sides were drawn together in the Europa League knockout round play-offs.

On Monday United were drawn against Barcelona in the Europa League play-off round 

One United fan commented that De Jong is ‘finally coming to Manchester’.

Another supporter stated that it is time to get ‘revenge’ on De Jong.

They wrote: ‘It was destined for this wasn’t it! Revenge against De Jong come on.’

De Jong’s reluctance to play in the Europa League is thought to have been among the reasons why the midfielder did not want to make the switch to United, a fact not lost among one fan.

They wrote: ‘Frenkie de Jong in summer: You won’t see me playing Europa League football at Old Trafford this season. Nope. No thanks.’

Another stated that the game resembles a Champions League tie, rather than a Europa League matchup.

They wrote: ‘The Barcelona Vs Man United draw doesn’t look Europa. It looks like a champions league stuff. How time flies.’

De Jong was heavily linked with a move to United but a deal didn’t end up happening

Another suggested that the game is the perfect chance for United star Cristiano Ronaldo to provide a reminder of his quality.

They wrote: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo to show Barcelona he still remains the GOAT one more time, I’ve prayed for time like this.’ 

Another said the two sites being pitted against each other was ‘the least shocking thing ever’.
