And on Christmas Day, several Southampton players wore festive gear as they prepared for the clash against Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

Many members of the squad such as Brazilian centre-back Lyanco were wearing Christmas jumpers, while goalkeeper Willy Caballero was put through his paces while sporting a reindeer-themed wooly hat.

Having had just two players at the World Cup in Armel Bella-Kotchap (Germany) and Mohammed Salisu (Ghana), Jones has had plenty of time on the training ground to work on implementing his style of of play.

Speaking ahead of the Boxing Day clash – which sees Jones return to a club that he played and coached at – the Welshman highlighted the challenge Southampton face.

He said: ‘They’re a fantastic side. They’re a real, good forward-thinking side that is difficult to play against.

‘We’re going to have to be at our best to get anything, but this is the test we want.

‘It’s a fantastic occasion and that’s why we came here. We’re building something and we need a buy in from everyone, we need a minor bit of patience. It wasn’t build in a day.

‘We’re trying to build something and it starts again now. It’s a different competition come Boxing Day and we’re going to go at it head on.’
