Aussie soccer star Sam Kerr runs riot on social media with a string of celebratory videos

Australian soccer star Sam Kerr has spent a night celebrating after kicking a golden boot-winning goal to lift Chelsea to back-to-back titles in the Women’s Super League.

The 27-year-old volleyed home her 21st goal of the season to become the competition’s top markswoman as Chelsea thrashed Reading 5-0 to retain the title – with all attention now on the weekend’s Champions League final against Barcelona.

Kerr took to Instagram on Sunday night to share hilarious footage pouring drinks over her face in the change rooms and making a series of comments on teammates’ posts including ‘you look good on me aye’ and ‘ADOPT ME’.

Kerr comes from rich sporting bloodlines, with both her father, Roger, and brother, Daniel, playing professional Aussie Rules. Daniel played 220 games for the West Coast Eagles, earning All-Australian honours and winning the 2006 AFL Premiership. 

She moved to Chelsea halfway through the 2019-20 season, just before the start of the pandemic, after becoming the all-time goal scorer in both the A-League and National Women’s Soccer League in the USA.

In Sunday’s title-deciding final game of the season Kerr scored one and set up another three as Chelsea rolled through to a consecutive title and sparked wild celebrations at the club’s Kingsmeadow ground.

‘She’s an Aussie? You know [she won’t stop]. She’s in party mode,’ one person tweeted.

Former Socceroo Tim Cahill and Australian cricketer Peter Siddle were among her compatriots congratulating the 27-year-old superstar on Instagram as she lit up the platform with her celebrations. 

Kerr, like her father and brother, grew up playing Aussie Rules, only converting to football when she was 12.

The AFLW reached out to her last year trying to poach football’s newest rising star and make her the face of the league’s inaugural season.

She rejected the approaches, saying she has much more to achieve in the world game.

‘One day I might finish off in an Eagles guernsey, but there’s more opportunity, more to accomplish in women’s soccer at the moment,’ Kerr told FourFourTwo. 

‘I don’t want this code-war mentality. AFL gets out to support the soccer and soccer gets out to support AFL. Any sport in Australia is great and it’s really good for us.’
